Multidisciplinary pain management

Combining different approaches to chronic pain care

Chronic pain cannot always be treated simply with pain medication or interventions. In some cases, pain medication may cease being effective, and in other cases long-term use of some pain medication comes with other risks.

Multidisciplinary pain management is an approach where several different types of treatment are used together to address the pain and as a result give people greater function and mobility and an improved lifestyle. The reduction of ongoing pain also helps with outlook and mood.

Treatments included in multidisciplinary pain management include conventional medical treatment alongside psychological therapies and physical therapies, generally provided by a team of doctors and allied health professionals.

Multidisciplinary pain management treatments

Different approaches that may support pain management

Apart from medication, including pain relief medication taken orally or injected, and surgery including device implants, there are a number of other approaches to controlling or reducing pain.

Cognitive behaviour therapy

CBT involves helping someone to think and feel differently about the pain they have.

Physical activity

Stretching, walking, aerobic or strength exercises may help reduce pain, with activity increased gradually where appropriate.

Relaxation techniques

Approaches such as meditation and yoga may form part of pain management.

Support groups

Connecting with others may provide shared experiences, support and different approaches to managing pain.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

TENS uses low levels of electrical current through the skin to help relieve localised pain, although evidence of effectiveness is inconclusive.

Medication and injections

Pain management may include oral medication, ketamine infusion or nerve blocks where appropriate.

Surgical and implantable treatments

Treatment may also include surgery or devices such as peripheral nerve or spinal cord stimulators where clinically appropriate.
